Silverfish and Bedbugs pairing up and taking over New York City

Silverfish

Much of New York City is covered in a variety of nasty bugs and pests. Although bedbugs bite and are quite a large nuisance, so are silverfish. These pests are normally, or should we say always wingless and have a silvery-brown color due to the fact that they are covered in scales. Most silverfish are soft-bodied, meaning that they are disgusting to most NYC dwellers.

These pests invading NYC’s Upper East Side are about ¾ of an inch long and are flat from top to bottom as well as that they are long and oval in shape. What makes them a pest as well as disgusting is that they have three long tail projections and two large antennae.

The other kind of silverfish that also resides in Manhattan goes by the name of the Firebrat and is very similar in habits except that it is darker in color and prefers temperatures 90 degrees Fahrenheit, but has a similar high humidity requirement. You would most likely find these pests living in basements underneath or by heating pipes in New York City.

Silverfish are capable of laying about 100 eggs continuously throughout their life and as soon as they become adults. Normally eggs are deposited singly or in small batches inside cracks and crevices and hatch in approximately 3 weeks. These posh pests develop from egg to young adult in 4-6 weeks and are continuously molting throughout their live, much like the “fashionistas” that reside on the Upper West Side.

In their immature stages they look like the adults, except that they are white in color and are only 1/20th of an inch in length. They slowly change into that silvery color as they get bigger. They also may outlive many of the Upper East Side residents by being able to live anywhere from two to eight years in Manhattans basements.

Silver Fish

Like our friend the bed bug these silverfish are chewers, but they don’t chew you the mainly chew on flour, dried meats, rolled oats, paper, and glue off of book bindings. These pests are able to survive a very long period of time, up to a year without eating but are very sensitive to moisture and require 70-90 percent humidity in order to survive. Also, like many New Yorkers they are picky about temperature and require it to be between 70 to 80 degrees F. They are also very fast runners and again like many Upper East Sider’s they only come out at night.

It simply doesn’t matter who you are or where you live, from Queens to Manhattan these pests are not necessarily worried about how much rent is on the Upper East Side or even Midtown. Like the bedbug it isn’t because you’re dirty, it’s simply because they chose you and made you their roommate.
