American Lady Butterfly has four wings, two hind wings and two forewings, that are symmetrical in pattern and shape. The upper surface of the wing is mostly black, brown, and orange. They also have some white spots with red and blue markings. The underside of the wings are gray, with white and red markings. They have three pairs of legs. American Lady Butterfly often tuck the front pair of legs under their body, making it look as if they only have four legs.
American Lady Butterfly found in a variety of open habitats including old fields, meadows, and roadsides where their major host plants, Pussytoes and Pearly Everlasting, are found.
Life Cycle: American Lady Butterfly eggs are pale green and barrel-shaped. They are laid on the leaves of host plants. When caterpillars hatch they begin eating right away. American Lady Butterfly are black with yellow markings, and they grow over an inch long before they turn to pupae.They pupa of a butterfly is called a chrysalis.
American Lady Butterfly chrysalis is brown and bumpy. After a couple of weeks, adult American Lady Butterflies will emerge from their chrysalises.Adult butterflies sip nectar from many different flowers, including goldenrods, milkweeds, asters, Joe-pye Weed, Ironweed, Red Clover, and Blazing Star.

American Lady Butterfly are multiple generations per year.American Lady Butterfly are most common in the spring. Adults and larvae are found in a variety of habitats including uplands, sandhills, flatwoods, lawns, and weedy areas. Eggs are laid on the upper surface of leaves of the host plants. Larvae make nests at the tops of host plants by silking together leaves and chaff at the tips of the flower stalks where they hide during the daytime and come out at night and on overcast days to feed.
